Public Comment Sought On Plan To Help Save Eastern Monarch Butterfly

wikipedia

Public comment is being sought on a draft conservation plan expected to help reverse the population decline of the eastern monarch butterfly.

The Midwest Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies will accept public comment through May 31 on the Mid-America Monarch Conservation Strategy that covers a 16-state region stretching from Texas to the Upper Midwest, including Ohio. The region encompasses the primary production and migratory habitat areas for the butterflies. The strategy builds on existing efforts by local, state, and federal agencies and private organizations and individuals. Monarch butterflies have declined by more than 80 percent over the past 20 years, primarily due to habitat loss, including fewer nectar plants and fewer milkweed plants needed for reproduction.
