State Will No Longer Inspect Troubled Cuyahoga County Jail

nytimes.com

State officials say they no longer need to conduct monthly inspections at the troubled Cuyahoga County jail, citing significantly improved operations.

Governor Mike DeWine ordered the inspections in 2019, following several inmate deaths. The jail also became the subject of dozens of lawsuits over conditions and misconduct. The Ohio Department of Rehabilitation and Correction says after 16 months of increased scrutiny, the county jail complies with all but seven state standards. The U.S. Marshals Service has called jail conditions inhumane.
